Proteins used in the production of vaccines and medicines against epidemic diseases, which are the code of many difficult diseases including cancer, started to be studied at Izmir University of Economics (IUE). Asst. Prof. Dr. Günnur Güler, faculty member from IUE Biomedical Engineering, who conducted the study, heralded that they reached the stage of testing proteins and enzymes in detail by supplying the necessary devices within the scope of the international project supported by TUBITAK. Asst. Prof. Dr. Güler said, “We aim to determine the structural and functional properties of proteins in our project. We are trying to determine the response of proteins to external factors and the sequence of events that occur in this process, particularly. If we unravel the secrets of proteins, the foundation of developing drugs and vaccines for many diseases will be laid in a short time. Considering that the Covid-19 virus attaches to our cell via 'spike protein', it becomes clear how important this project is.”
IUE faculty member Asst. Prof. Dr. Güler is running the project on proteins with Dr. Mikhail Vorobiev from the Russian Academy of Sciences. Workshops in Turkey and Russia are planned after the Covid-19 is over within the scope of the project that is intended to complete in two years. Thanks to the project, changes in the structure of proteins, which form the basis of many scientific studies on humans, with time, will be analyzed in detail. Asst. Prof. Dr. Güler's project will also shed light on many scientific studies to be implemented in the upcoming period, especially on biotechnological applications.
THE DURATION OF MAKING VACCINES MAY BE SHORTENED
Providing detailed information about the project, Asst. Prof. Dr. said, “Solving the structure of proteins is also the main goal of scientists who want to develop vaccines or drugs. We based our project on this idea while implementing it. We set out to determine the structural and functional properties of proteins. One of the building blocks of the studies carried out to develop a vaccine against the Covid-19 virus, which affects the whole world, is proteins. The protein structure of every disease, every virus can vary. Changes in protein structure can also occur in virus mutations. Accordingly, the vaccine or drug development process can also change and take a long time. If we unravel the secrets of proteins, the duration of the work carried out for vaccine and drug production in the upcoming period may be shortened and diseases can be found more easily.”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Güler continued as follows: “Projects and research on proteins have been increasing in recent years. Studies on different properties of proteins in many countries in Europe are considered very valuable. In the coming period, we may encounter protein engineers more often. The acceptance of our project by TUBITAK and the opportunity to conduct a research on this subject is really valuable. We want to complete our project as soon as possible and contribute to science.”
