Told the world about the 'Green Consensus'
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Görkem Üçtuğ from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) took part in the Harvard Business Review Sustainability Summit along with participants from all over the world. Delivering a presentation about the Green Consensus, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Üçtuğ stated that Turkey would adapt to the transformation very quickly with appropriate regulations and incentives.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Görkem Üçtuğ, Vice Dean of IUE Faculty of Engineering, was a speaker at the ‘Harvard Business Review Sustainability Summit’, where many CEOs, academics, journalists and representatives of non-governmental organizations from Turkey and abroad attended online. In the panel titled 'Green Consensus and Its Reflections on the Energy Sector' moderated by Mehmet Erdoğan Elgin, Bloomberg Businessweek Turkey, Energy Editor, Üçtuğ, who delivered a presentation together with Mikayil Yusufov, Chief Communications and Government Relations Officer at SOCAR Turkey, explained the changes that the ‘Green Consensus’ will bring and the work that can be done.
TURKEY HAS COMPETENCE
Evaluating the risks that will arise if the transformation in Turkey is not achieved on time, Üçtuğ said, “According to the research conducted by the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD), the loss that our country will experience if it cannot achieve transformation is between 800 million and 1.8 billion euros per year. It's so high. However, we can transform very quickly with appropriate regulations and appropriate incentives. At the summit, I conveyed that our country has this competence.”
INFORMATION MUST BE SHARED TRANSPARENTLY
Making a statement on what kind of strategy should be determined for the transformation of the Green Consensus, Üçtuğ stated the following: “The public, private sector, non-governmental organizations and universities need to act together during the transformation process. It is of great importance that the data collection and carbon footprint calculation processes are carried out transparently. We cannot benefit from green funds if we do not share the right information. The formation of such a prejudice against Turkish companies brings along a negative process for all of us.”
WE INFORM ABOUT THE PROCESS
Mentioning that Izmir University of Economics has carried out very important studies on the Green Consensus, Üçtuğ said, “We, the academics at the University, address with the Green Consensus with its different aspects, produce technical solutions and try to inform different segments of society about the changes that the Green Consensus will bring. We provide carbon footprint consultancy to leading companies in various sectors such as petrochemical, food, energy, finance and informatics. We will continue with our work at home and abroad.”
