Domestic Robot for Space Exploration
Students from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Engineering have developed a specialized robot capable of scanning surfaces and conducting exploration in space, thanks to its integrated robotic arm, camera, and sensors. Named ‘ECO Rover’ by the young team, the robot weighs approximately 50 kilograms and it stands out with its software and technological features, enabling it to move autonomously, determine its location, and utilize a drill mechanism to collect soil samples from the areas it explores. The driving, power, and control systems were designed entirely within IUE, making the robot suitable for effective use on Mars or the Moon. The ECO Rover will compete for first place at the Anatolian Rover Challenge (ARC), hosted by Middle East Technical University (METU) in July and organized by the Space Exploration Society.
The team, consisting of young prospective engineers Burakcan Akçit, Efe Erdoğan, Berkay Bağcı, Ege Mutlu, Alara Rodoplu, and Faruk Emre Yavuz, carried out their 15-month project under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pınar Oğuz Ekim from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
STATIC ANALYSIS AND FIELD TESTING
Numerous engineering methods were applied during the development of ECO Rover’s electronic, mechanical, and software subsystems. Static analyses were performed for the suspension system, robotic arm prototype, and drill mechanism. Custom designs and soldering techniques were used for the electronic hardware infrastructure, while additive manufacturing, sheet metal bending, and welding methods were combined during the production stages. The students also utilized artificial intelligence during the motor development process and conducted field tests. Additionally, a module was added to allow the robot to perform scientific analyses.
“A VALUABLE ENGINEERING EFFORT”
Sharing details about the project, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pınar Oğuz Ekim stated that they have achieved a significant engineering project by blending mechanical, software, electronic, and control systems. Noting that ECO Rover includes the fundamental functions required for a space exploration robot, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ekim said: “The ECO Rover project is a tangible demonstration of our students' imagination, interdisciplinary collaboration skills, and solution-oriented approach. One of the most innovative aspects is that all its systems were developed within Izmir University of Economics. The robot’s autonomous movement, positioning capabilities, and its ability to analyze its surroundings and scan surfaces via sensors and cameras are the key features that set our project apart. Our students had the opportunity to develop their professional competencies, such as teamwork, time management, and engineering ethics, while doing all of this.”
“ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT INVESTMENT AREAS FOR NATIONS”
Emphasizing that space studies are critical investment areas that directly impact a nation's scientific, technological, and strategic future, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ekim said, “The way to have a say in this field is to ensure that young people take an interest in space technologies at an early age and to support their hands-on projects. The ECO Rover project serves as an exemplary and pioneering model in this regard. The dedication and creativity shown by our students clearly demonstrate what high-quality projects can be achieved when youth are given the right guidance and academic support. These types of projects not only provide young people with technical knowledge; they also prepare the ground for them to dream, question, and gain the courage to produce the technologies of the future. Our goal as a University is not just to follow science and technology, but to raise individuals who lead these fields. This study is also a very valuable step taken towards this goal.”
