REALTIME DETERMINATION OF MOOD IN CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT
Advisor: Prof. Aydın Akan |
The purpose of this project is to use a camera to track the attention of students in a classroom when the instructor is unable to ascertain the status of the student. To achieve this goal, heart rate, galvanic skin response, and facial expressions were monitored using electrocardiogram (ECG), galvanic skin response (GSR), and a camera. The mood of students was captured in real-time and the instructor was informed using colorful LED lights.

AUTONOMOUS OPTICAL AND INERTIAL NAVIGATION OF A SOLAR-SAIL PROPELLED CUBESAT CLASS SPACECRAFT TARGETING MARS AND ITS MOONS
Advisor: Asst. Prof. Fabrizio Pinto |
In this thesis, autonomous optical spacecraft navigation is put to the test with the help of the Free Wolfram Engine within Jupyter Notebooks. The relationship between the spacecraft-centric ecliptic and celestial coordinates of 55 systematically chosen beacon asteroids of known heliocentric Cartesian coordinates is explored. Such Free/FOSS tools as Stellarium and Astrograv are used, along with the Horizons ephemeris service made available by the NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

PROOF-OF-CONCEPT OF A SOLAR SAIL PROPELLED CUBESAT CLASS SPACECRAFT DIGITAL TWIN TARGETING MARS AND ITS MOONS
Advisor: Asst. Prof. Fabrizio Pinto |
A Digital Twin, which enables real-time monitoring, analysis, and predictive modeling, is a virtual replica of a real system, such as a spacecraft. In this project, we consider the potential of using Scilab/Xcos to simulate the behavior of the subsystems of a spacecraft traveling to Mars by solar sail propulsion, and we provide a proof-of-concept Digital Twin for that spacecraft.

TRAJECTORY DESIGN AND FLIGHT DYNAMICS OF A SOLAR-SAIL PROPELLED CUBESAT CLASS SPACECRAFT TARGETING MARS AND ITS MOONS
Advisor: Asst. Prof. Fabrizio Pinto |
Solar radiation pressure is a very significant aspect of any space mission, both in terms of perturbations and of propulsion, such as in the case of solar sailing. This study explores the orbital dynamics of a mission to reach the planet Mars with a solar sail-propelled CubeSat spacecraft, mainly by means of the NASA General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT).

DETECTION OF THE EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION ON ATTENTION/MEMORY USING EEG SIGNALS
Advisor: Prof. Aydın Akan |
In this study, the effect of noise on attention and memory is investigated using electroencephalogram (EEG) via signal processing methods and machine learning. Results indicate that increased noise levels have detrimental effects whereas calm environments have positive effects on attention and working memory.

AUTONOMOUS OPTICAL AND INERTIAL NAVIGATION OF SOLAR-SAIL PROPELLED CUBESAT CLASS SPACECRAFT DURING TARGETING MISSIONS TO ASTEROIDS AND MINOR MOONS
Advisor: Asst. Prof. Fabrizio Pinto |
Because of the heavy demand placed of the Deep Space Network, there exists a strong motivation to develop autonomous navigation technologies. This project aims to explore the use of on-board autonomous optical navigation systems during deep space missions by modeling a synthetic stellar environment by means of the Free Wolfram Engine in the Mathematica language, thus leading to estimates of the spacecraft position.

END-TO-END SOFTWARE MODELLING AND SIMULATION OF SOLAR-SAIL PROPELLED CUBESAT CLASS SPACECRAFT TARGETING ASTEROIDS AND MINOR MOONS
Advisor: Asst. Prof. Fabrizio Pinto |
The driving motivation in this study is to simulate the operations phase of a space mission by issuing commands to the spacecraft when necessary. In order to achieve this task, only Free Open Source Software (FOSS) tools were evaluated and tested for use with a CubeSat-class solar sail propelled spacecraft, including, but not limited to, FreeCAD, NASA NOS3, NASA OSK, NASA 42, NASA GMAT, NASA Open MCT, and COSMOS.

SPACECRAFT DESIGN AND FLIGHT DYNAMICS OF A SOLAR-SAIL PROPELLED CUBESAT CLASS MINI-CONSTELLATION TARGETING STABLE ORBITS IN THE PLUTO SYSTEM
Advisor: Asst. Prof. Fabrizio Pinto |
The aim of this project is to study the flight dynamics of a CubeSat-class mini-constellation targeting stable orbits in the Pluto system. The motivation of this project is to increase space mission success rate while decreasing costs by simultaneously using CubeSat constellation and solar sail propulsion concepts. The initial design of the vehicle was a scaled up LightSail 2 concept, whose orbital dynamics is modeled by means of the NASA General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT).

FOSS DRIVEN CUBESAT MISSION
Advisor: Asst. Prof. Fabrizio Pinto |
In this project we aim to design a lunar mission based on a CubeSat simulated by free open source software tools (FOSS). Open source software is coded by communities, so that usage of these tools is more reliable and not dependent on one person or private company. We provide an extensive review of spacecraft subsystems for several past missions, we design the spacecraft with such tools as FreeCAD and we simulate the mission by using NASA GMAT and Scilab/Xcos.

ROCKET AND ROCKET STAGE VERTICAL LANDING ON THE MOON
Advisor: Asst. Prof. Fabrizio Pinto |
This paper begins with the history of spacecraft vertical landing from the Apollo Lunar Module to the Space X Falcon 9 and, in the future, of Starship. The trajectory of a spacecraft on a translunar trajectory from the Earth to the Moon was propagated to a lunar parking orbit, which marks the initial altitude of the landing phase. The optimal thrust switch-on point for the terminal phase of a spacecraft landing on the Moon was calculated.

ROTORCRAFT AND FIXED WING PROPELLOR DRONES FOR EXPLORATION IN PLANETARY ATMOSPHERES
Advisor: Asst. Prof. Fabrizio Pinto |
An examination of the parameters and characteristics of the Ingenuity Helicopter, which landed on Mars with the Perseverance Rover on 18 February 2021, was conducted by means of the Xfoil development system. The atmospheric and gravitational environments of Mars and of the Earth were compared in terms of their conduciveness to helicopter flight. This study was extended to consider a proposed helicopter to be deployed in the dense atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan.
