‘Protein’ project by IUE academic
International research project of Asst. Prof. Günnur Güler from Department of Biomedical Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), on “proteins”, which are being used in wide variety of areas, including making of vaccines and medicines, and cell studies, has been accepted by TUBITAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey). Asst. Prof. Güler, who indicated that the changes in the structure of protein would be analyzed thoroughly as part of the 720 thousand TL budgeted project, said, “This study would be as a kind of guiding light for the world of science.”
Asst. Prof. Günnur Güler, who received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Biophysics Frankfurt Goethe-University in Germany, will be carrying out the project she has been working on for quite some time with Dr. Mikhail Vorobiev from the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). Series of workshops will be held in Turkey and Russia as part of the project that is planned to be completed in three years. Changes that occur over time in the protein structure, which lay the foundation for many studies on humans, will be analyzed in details. The project of Asst. Prof. Güler, who has participated in many studies abroad so far, will shed light on many scientific studies, including biotechnological practices in particular.
“WE WILL IDENTIFY ALL THE PROCESSES”
Asst. Prof. Günnur Güler gave the following information about the project: “Today, the proteins lay the foundation for many scientific studies. Making of vaccines and medicines, cell studies and biological implementations are some of the areas the proteins are used for. All of the biological structures in our body have a dynamic, a motion. Proteins also have a motion, a vibration in their own way, and interaction with other proteins. We will be analyzing these motions via experimental, biophysical, and mathematical methods in our study. We will be identifying all the change processes regarding the proteins.”
“IT WILL BE A FIRST IN TURKEY”
Asst. Prof. Güler continued as: “We will be conducting our research at the hi-tech labs at IUE. We will be in contact with Mikhail Vorobiev from Russia all the time. He will be supporting this project with studies in his country. There hasn’t been a similar study conducted in Turkey before. Therefore, we care about this project very much. For example, a pharmaceutical company which wants to improve an existing medicine, will shape their studies by reviewing our study. I can say that our study will be as a guiding light in that sense.”
