A childhood dream took him to Italy

Emre Şimşek, a graduate of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Aerospace Engineering, has been accepted for a master's program at Politecnico di Milano, one of the world's top-ranked engineering institutions. Having secured a place among the select few who get the opportunity to study in Italy, Şimşek will begin his studies in September at the 162-year-old university, specializing in ‘aerospace engineering’. Expressing his lifelong passion for airplanes and aviation, Şimşek said, “My biggest goal has always been to conduct international research on unmanned aerial vehicles. I’m excited to make this dream a reality.”
24-year-old Emre Şimşek from Izmir made the most of IUE’s double major (DMP) opportunity by studying both aerospace engineering as well as industrial engineering simultaneously. He also pursued a minor in computer sciences and information systems, further diversifying his expertise to strengthen his career prospects.
With his high GPA, university projects, and recommendation letters setting him apart, Şimşek has added yet another academic achievement to his record by securing an opportunity to study in Italy. Over the next two years, he will work hard to represent his country in the best way possible and will complete his master's degree with a scholarship provided by the Italian government.
MY PASSION REMAINS
Stating that Politecnico di Milano is ranked among the world's top 20 universities for engineering, Şimşek expressed his happiness at being accepted into such a prestigious institution. Şimşek said, “As a child, I always wanted to be either a pilot or an engineer. The sky, airplanes, and various atmospheric phenomena always fascinated me. Almost all of my toys were airplanes. Whenever I saw a plane, I would cry, saying I wanted to fly it. Even as the years passed, my enthusiasm never faded. This passion for aviation played a decisive role in my university choice, which is why I selected IUE’s Aerospace Engineering program. I’m so glad I made that decision. My professors and university always supported me. They believed in me and stood by my side.”
ITALY IS A VALUABLE GATEWAY
Şimşek continued as follows: “Studying abroad has always been my goal. I want to work on unmanned aerial vehicles, write a thesis in the field of aerodynamic test engineering, and contribute groundbreaking work in this area. Italy is a valuable gateway to achieving these ambitions. Previously, I worked as a candidate flight test engineer at TUSAŞ (Turkish Aerospace Industries), where I had the chance to experience the professional side of one of our country’s leading defense industry companies. After completing my master’s, I aim to pursue a Ph.D. at one of the top universities in the United States specializing in my field.”
