EXTERIOR ADDITIONS ON BUILDINGS POSE GREAT RISKS

Along with global warming, ocean warming occurs which in return causes temperature and climate changes. With warmer oceans caused by global warming, we can expect the strongest storms to get stronger, the experts warn. Strong winds apply pressure to buildings, all the exterior units attached to them, pointed out Prof. Dr. Celal Kozanoğlu, and he said, “Many exterior additions on buildings including AC units, television antennas, satellite dishes, and solar energy systems, and water tanks on rooftops are not being supervised. These need to be installed by professionals. Today, in our country, only the municipalities are authorized to inspect these. Private companies need to carry out installations by teams who are competent and accredited.” Prof. Dr. Kozanoğlu stated that property owners’ hands and feet were tied when it came to getting installations done by people adept at installing. “When you get on a taxi, you don’t question the driver whether he has a driving license or not. The same goes for people who come for installation. You purchase an AC unit or solar energy system. Teams come and do the installation. It is the same with rooftops, water tanks, or signboards. Just like in the building inspection, we need a system and inspection for this area. All exterior units, including satellite dishes, need to be centered in a building during architectural project phase,” indicated Prof. Dr. Kozanoğlu. He said that these integrated solutions in architectural projects would prevent many accidents caused by human error. Prof. Dr. Kozanoğlu pointed out that the municipalities needed to consider this subject when they give building permit.
