Electric car presented at TEKNOFEST
The electric car developed by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) students to be exhibited at TEKNOFEST, Turkey's first and only aerospace and technology festival, was highly admired. The car, whose chassis, steering wheel and mechanical parts are made of aluminum, can travel up to 500 kilometers by increasing the number of batteries on it, and has low energy consumption thanks to its light weight, fascinated the visitors. TEKNOFEST visitors examined the electric car in detail, got into the car and took plenty of photos.
Students of IUE Faculty of Engineering carried out R&D work for the car, which took about 2 years. The assembly of the car was completed in about 3 months as a result of meticulous work. The electric car, which was realized by Dr. Murat Türkan of IUE Department of Mechanical Engineering and 13 students forming the ECOWHEELS team, was introduced for the first time at TEKNOFEST, the third stage of which was held in Izmir this year, under the leadership of the Turkish Technology Team Foundation and the Ministry of Industry and Technology.
UP TO 50 KILOMETERS PER HOUR
Giving detailed information about the automobile, Dr. Türkan said, “The design and all the planning of the vehicle belongs to our students. I can say that its chassis and mechanical parts are domestic. While making these, we used aluminum as a material. Since aluminum is light, it helps decrease the energy consumption of the vehicle. The vehicle has 2 electric motors. These are located inside the tire rims at the back. Since the car is electric, we have also prepared a special battery pack. We have put 110 batteries as the vehicle is a prototype for now, and it is currently possible to travel up to 50 kilometers with these batteries. Of course, by increasing the number of batteries, we can increase this range from 50 kilometers to 500 kilometers. Our vehicle is RWD and has features that can reach speeds of 40-50 kilometers.”
WE WILL ALSO PARTICIPATE IN THE COMPETITION
Stating that they will also participate in the ‘Efficiency Challenge Electric Vehicle Races’ to be held by TUBITAK in 2024 with the car they have developed, Dr. Türkan said, “It is very valuable that students work as a team, carry out studies with reference to science and reason, and produce new things. As an academic, working with students, observing their excitement and enthusiasm, and producing together is really a tremendous feeling. I would like to thank all students for their efforts and for making me experience this feeling. We will continue our efforts to further develop the vehicle and add new features.”
WE ENCOURAGE STUDENTS
Visiting the booth of Izmir University of Economics at TEKNOFEST, Rector Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu said that they always encourage students to develop scientific projects. Prof. Dr. Abacıoğlu stated that they are all excited that TEKNOFEST is organized in Izmir and he said, “Our students have created an electric car that makes a difference with its design. With this work, they discovered the excitement of creativity, the power of production and the value of knowledge. I congratulate them for their successful work.”
